Umetnost da se spoji sirova snaga death metala sa pamtljivim melodijama je suština melodic death metala, stila koji je nastao početkom 1990-ih u Švedskoj, najviše u podrumima Geteborga.
Bendovi kao što su At the Gates, In Flames i Dark Tranquillity oblikovali su novi zvuk – kombinaciju ekstremnog zvuka sa melodičnim rifovima, atmosferom i strukturom pesama koja je više ličila na klasični heavy metal nego na tadašnji death metal.
Taj geteborški zvuk brzo je prešao granice i inspirisao muzičare širom sveta. Do danas, melodeath je već imao više generacija – neke bendove koji su išli u ekstremniji pravac, druge koji su postali još melodičniji, ali svi su nosili isti prepoznatljivi švedski pečat.
